This is what we can call exotic food! Thoroughly tempting and absolutely mouth-watering, Chana Gosht is a delicacy you would want to go back to again and again.

For the Bhuna Gosht

  • 1 kg mutton/lamb (with bone) – washed and cleaned
  • 4 medium sized onions - finely chopped
  • 4 tsp garlic paste
  • 3 tsp red chilli powderSalt
  • 3 tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tsp cumin powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 5 medium tomatoes - pureed or finely chopped
  • 4 tsp ginger paste
  • 1½ cups water
  • ¼ cup mustard oil
  • 4 tsp ghee

For the Chana Dal Gosht

  • 1 cup chana dal (split chick peas)
  • 2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 4-5 tbs fresh cream
  • 1 onion, sliced, fried until brown and kept aside
  • 2 green chillies, lightly fried
  • A handful of mint leaves Lemon juice


  • Take a heavy based saucepan or pre
  • ssure cooker.
  • Add in the mutton, chopped onions, garlic, salt, chili powder, ground coriander, turmeric and water.
  • Cook for 20 minutes on high flame. Keep stirring continuously until all the water has dried up.
  • Now add tomatoes and ginger paste. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Then, add oil and cook for 10 minutes. Do keep stirring.
  • Add one or two tablespoons of water to prevent the gravy from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Once the oil separates from the gravy, turn the flame off.
  • The bhuna gosht is prepared.
  • Now, add the chana dal and red chilli powder to the bhuna gosht.
  • Add water so that it covers around 1 inch above the level of the dal and meat.
  • Cover the pressure cooker and cook till 3 whistles. If you are cooking in a regular utensil, cover and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes.
  • Check if the dal and meat are fully cooked.
  • Then add garam masala powder, adjust the salt and mix thoroughly.
  • Cook on medium flame for another 10 minutes, stirring continuously.
  • Turn off the flame. Add fresh cream and mix into the Dal Gosht.
